Originally conceived as a war machine, the fort was built in a strategic position at the tip of the Sceberras peninsula to counter the Ottoman armada. Its position offers a panoramic view of the surrounding ports and towns, which has been recognized since medieval times. A permanent guard post at Santo Eramo is mentioned in the militia list of 1417. Following an Ottoman attack in 1551 and reports of an imminent siege, Grand Master De Homedes ordered the construction of the fort.
